Functional Analyst
Function
We’re looking for a rigorous and analytical Functional Analyst to join our client’s technology delivery team and help translate complex business requirements into clear, buildable and testable solutions. You’ll operate in a fast-moving environment where applications, integrations and data need to work reliably together, playing a key role in ensuring that functional specifications are precise, complete and aligned with real-world operational needs.
The Role & Responsibilities
This is a dedicated functional analysis role rather than a traditional business analysis position. Business Analysts work directly with stakeholders to capture business needs and user requirements. You will take those requirements and turn them into detailed specifications that development and testing teams can execute, covering system behaviour, interfaces, data, business rules, edge cases and failure scenarios.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Reviewing business and user requirements for completeness, consistency, feasibility and ambiguity.
- Challenging assumptions and identifying contradictions or missing information before development begins.
- Translating requirements into detailed functional specifications, features, user stories, acceptance criteria, business rules and system behaviour.
- Defining error handling, exceptions and failure scenarios.
- Specifying system-to-system integrations, including API contracts, exchanged data, payload structures and integration behaviour.
- Working with REST/SOAP APIs and message- or event-based integrations.
- Defining relevant non-functional requirements such as latency, throughput and availability, particularly for real-time systems.
- Working closely with architects, developers and testers throughout implementation.
- Clarifying functional questions and adapting specifications when technical or business circumstances evolve.
- Maintaining accurate and up-to-date functional documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
- Supporting defect triage, test preparation and User Acceptance Testing (UAT).
- Investigating data directly using SQL when required to validate business rules, analyse issues or qualify defects.
- Acting as a reliable functional reference point for the delivery team.
Technical Profile
You bring at least 3 years of professional experience in functional analysis gained within the last 8 years, with demonstrable experience producing detailed functional specifications. You are comfortable working with complex systems and integrations and can move confidently between requirements, processes, data and technical implementation.
Your experience should include:
- Functional specifications, user stories, acceptance criteria, business rules and error/exception handling.
- Functional analysis methodologies or notations such as BPMN, UML, use cases or equivalent.
- System-to-system integration analysis involving REST or SOAP APIs and/or event- or message-based interfaces.
- API contract design and review using OpenAPI/Swagger or equivalent.
- Working with JSON/XML payload structures and integration error handling.
- Defining non-functional constraints such as performance, latency, throughput and availability.
- Independent SQL querying, including SELECT, JOIN, filtering and aggregation.
- Conceptual and logical data modelling, entity-relationship analysis and functional data dictionaries.
- Experience with Atlassian JIRA and Confluence, or functionally equivalent tools, for creating and maintaining specifications.
- Experience working closely with architects, developers and testers in a structured delivery environment.
The Ideal Candidate & Practical Requirements
You are analytical, precise and not afraid to challenge incomplete requirements or ask the questions others overlook. You combine strong documentation skills with a pragmatic approach and enjoy getting to the root of a problem rather than relying
